Things to see and do
The church Saint-Chartier is part of the first buildings listed as Historical Monuments in the mid-nineteenth century. Romanesque, it dates from the early twelfth century, and has a hundred sculptures and a funerary slab engraved from the early thirteenth century. Taking place on a secondary road of Saint Jacques de Compostela, it was enlarged in the 16th century to accommodate the many pilgrims.
Him also classified as an historical monument, the castle of Javarzay takes place on a site formerly occupied by a Gallo-Roman farm. Merovingian royal farm in the sixth century, it becomes one of the first castles of the Renaissance in Poitou. Built by François de Rochechouart around 1515, it presents twelve towers. This white stone building covered with slate reveals a turret staircase screw feudal type that serves the entire castle. A nineteenth-century orangery can also be visited, and the nineteenth-century wing houses exhibitions of artists. Inside, you can discover an exhibition retracing the life and work of Jean-François Cail, a bedroom of the Second Empire, a beautiful collection of headdresses and hats or reconstructions of scenes of the past.
Built in the first half of the 19th century, the Notre-Dame church is worth a visit with its neoclassical style making it look like La Madeleine in Paris.
While walking in the town, do not forget to admire the castle of which it remains two towers and a part of the wall of enclosure, the town hall of the XIXth century and its park with the bust of Jean-François Cail or laundries and mills that surround the surroundings.
